Pioneered by Oxfam, Second Hand September is an opportunity for us to unite and embrace a more sustainable way of shopping.
There was a time when our clothing choices truly reflected who we were and what we valued in our communities. But today, what do our fashion choices say? Are they a symbol of a throwaway culture and environmental degradation?
The fashion industry has become one of the most polluting on the planet, driving climate change and exacerbating poverty in communities that have contributed the least to the crisis. The mass production and transportation of clothing lead to enormous pollution, while our throwaway culture results in millions of garments ending up in landfills every year. Precious resources like water are being depleted at an alarming rate.
This is also true of your eyewear, as every year more than 5 million pairs of glasses are sold worldwide, and as the average person changes their glasses every 2 years that’s approximately 1.6 million pairs of glasses that get thrown away each year. Due to their composition, glasses frames are tricky to recycle so the majority of them end up in landfill.
This September, we are supporting Oxfam’s drive to make a stand against the harmful effects of fast fashion by choosing secondhand, and ONLY secondhand throughout the whole month. By exploring slow fashion, sustainable fashion, and ethical fashion, and by shopping and donating secondhand, we can help create a fairer, more conscious world.
